I’ve been playing some adventure games recently, particularly the Blackwell series. I felt sort of inspired to draw something that might fit into that context, a roughly 30x80px character in proportions that could fit into an environment with that level of detail. I decided to revisit an old pose I used for Welwyn from Soft Landing.
Very rough so far, of course! But, I think I will try to dedicate some time to trying to finish this one.
Been a bit spotty with my daily drawings recently, after focusing more on piano stuff. Hoping to get back into that, and maybe posting here will make me more accountable…
Last night’s was rough, for sure. Felt very rusty, nothing came naturally, lots of things I hate about it. I wanted to make sure I did something with interesting colors and some light and dark, but it ended up getting pretty messy. Still, I did something and that’s what counts!
I decided it might be interesting to try to touch up a few of the older Soft Landing sprites, and what better place to start than the iconic hero ship! Here’s my first pass, focussing on colour reduction, readability improvement and personality.
I really like naming things. Our Mori Pal has already gone through some changes since we started working with it for actual pieces, but I wanted to quickly post this old version which includes color names. Updated, battle-tested version coming soon!
I think I’m ready to call this one completed. A few things about it still bug me a bit but I think it was a really good exercise. I started with the 森 palette, but eventually settled into a customized 15-colour palette of my own. The parts I enjoyed working on the most were the bag and the boots. I think the colour palette gives them a pleasing texture. It was also interesting doing another background, this one was easier than the last one because I was able to just make it up my own way, and the foliage was easier to arrange, compared to the technical complexities of an urban environment.
Just polishing things up for now, almost done~
I think I have reached the point of diminishing returns on this piece. But I think it’s the first pixel art I am really proud of! Thanks to Ju for all the help and encouragement.
Not a ton of progress, but I did decide to go ahead and sketch in the background, which is *really* adding a new dimension of challenge. Got to follow through on it, tho, cos I was *born* to pixel that stack of boox.
Unfortunately, haven’t had much time to work on this one recently, but it is slowly coming along. Putting in a background, at the moment still more in the planning stages. More or less set on the positions of everything though!
I think I am winding downe on this one. Unless I decide to take the inspiration from Ju’s Anna piece and do… a background!?
